It took me a ridiculously long time to finish this drawing. I don’t know why. It really wasn’t overly complicated or anything like that. It’s not huge, the paper is only 9″ x 12″. I think what the problem was, was that I stopped and started it too many times, instead of just sitting down and doing most of it, if not all of it.
Does anyone else have this problem? It can’t be just me. Or can it?
Here is my reference photo. I just got it in my head that it would be fun to draw a cupcake. Where do you get your ideas for projects?
So I looked and looked until I found one that caught my eye. I guess this image caught other people’s eyes as well, because I’ve since seen a few drawings of the same image on Pinterest.
Original sketch:
This one I drew on sketchbook paper, then transferred it to drawing paper. This is my second drawing with my colored pencils after not using them for so long. The first was my Wildflower with bees piece. (Check it out here). So I’m still getting comfortable with this medium again.
Texture is tricky. I like how the cake part turned out. I think I’m pretty good with my colors, and I’m pleased with how it looks.
The hardest part of this whole drawing was getting that darn cupcake paper to look right. I’m not 100% satisfied with it, but we’re all our own worst critic, aren’t we? I can live with it, but might take a different approach were I to do it again.
This is one of the places where I took a giant break from my picture. This is where I lost my momentum. I think we had stuff going on, and I couldn’t just sit and draw. Then hours turned into days, turned into a couple weeks. Got it out a couple times for maybe an hour? Half an hour? Finally decided I just needed to sit down and finish the darn thing.
SO CLOSE TO BEING DONE HERE!!!!
Finally finished! I used a white gel pen to add some highlights. I’m going to start writing down the colors I use for each piece, but I didn’t for this one, or the next few…oops. I do have a list though, for some of my most current pictures, and I’m working on keeping one for each and every one I do in the future.
Looks ace! And I always enjoy seeing the drawing process 🙂

Love your casing. I did a cupcake a while back, with me it was a desire to do the icing 😂 Amazing what draws us isn’t it.
